It wasn’t that long ago that squads were hard fined for sending out weak teams, no matter what the competition. At some point in the 90s, Teams like Manchester United and Arsenal changed the regulations to their benefit as far as the Football Association were interested, contending that the future development of theirs and the national team depended on their power to have reserve role players into League Cup, FA Cup or European matches with aim to save first team players for their more important matches for the weekend.
Purists contended that it degraded the various contests – which it did and still does nowadays – but now, the rest of us face a much more annoying myth: The dubious ‘young kids’ of Arsenal.
